The place and meanings of happiness in End-of-Life-Care

The place and meanings of happiness in End-of-Life-Care

Cicely Saunders Institute Seminar by Dr Jonathan Koffman, Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care & Sub Dean for Postgraduate Teaching in the School of Medicine, Cicely Saunders Institute, King’s College London

We are all increasingly looking for ways to become happier. However, it is only recently that social scientists have begun to study happiness systematically. But is it possible to be happy at the end of life? Some hold that investigating this positive emotion is an indulgent goal compared to the need to understand other aspects of human suffering.

Dr Koffman will explore the concept of ‘happiness’ and what it means in the context of palliative and end-of-life care. The seminar will focus on recent cross-cultural evidence about the social construction of happiness among those who are living with, and dying from, cancer.

The seminar is free to attend, registration is not required and all visitors are welcome.
